Group Exporter for WhatsApp Web ยท last updated 12 October 2026
Group Exporter is a browser extension that saves the member list of a WhatsApp Web group you belong to as a file
(Excel, CSV or JSON) on your own computer. This page explains exactly what it reads, where that goes, and what it keeps.
The short version
- Everything happens inside your browser. The extension has no server and sends no group or contact data anywhere.
- The only file it creates is the export you download, saved where your browser saves downloads.
- It never sends messages, adds or removes people, or changes anything in WhatsApp. It only reads.
What it reads
When you choose a group and press Read members, the extension reads, on web.whatsapp.com in your browser:
- your list of groups (names and member counts), to fill the group picker;
- for the group you choose: each member's phone number (where WhatsApp has it), the name you saved them under,
their own WhatsApp name, a verified business name, and whether they are an admin.
It reads this from the data WhatsApp Web already keeps in your browser for your logged-in account, or from the
group's member list on the page. It cannot see anything your own WhatsApp account can't.
What it keeps
- The member list is held only in the WhatsApp tab's memory while you preview it, and is gone when you close or reload that tab.
Nothing about members is written to disk except the file you choose to download.
- Your settings (file format, include admins) are stored in your browser's extension storage.
- For the free tier, a one-way hash of the ID of the first group you exported is stored in Chrome's extension
sync storage, so the free tier isn't reset by reinstalling. It cannot be turned back into the group's name or ID.
- If you buy Pro, your licence key (and the email address the payment provider returns for it) is stored in your
browser's extension storage.
What leaves your computer
Only when you buy or activate Pro:
- Checkout opens the payment page of our payment provider, Polar
(Polar Software Inc.), which acts as the merchant of record. What you enter there is handled under
Polar's privacy policy.
- Activating a key sends the licence key to Polar's licence API (
api.polar.sh) to check it,
and again about once a week to confirm it hasn't been refunded. Chrome asks your permission before the first check.
No group, contact or WhatsApp data is ever included.
The extension contains no analytics, advertising, tracking or remote code.
Your responsibility for exported data
The file you export contains other people's personal data. Use it lawfully and respectfully: do not use it for spam
or unsolicited messages, and follow the privacy laws that apply to you (for example the GDPR in the EU, or Israel's
Protection of Privacy Law). This extension is not affiliated with, endorsed or sponsored by WhatsApp or Meta.
Deleting your data
Remove the extension from chrome://extensions to delete everything it stored locally. Delete exported files
like any other file. To have a purchase record removed, contact Polar or us.
